Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef lean, 80/20 blend preferred for flavor and texture
  • 1 tbsp olive oil extra virgin, used for sautéing vegetables.
  • 1 cup diced onions yellow or white onion, adds sweetness and depth
  • 2 cloves garlic minced, fresh garlic adds robust flavor
  • 1 cup beef broth low sodium, allows you to control the saltiness of the dish
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste adds rich, concentrated tomato flavor and thickness.
  • 1 tsp salt adjust to taste; start with less if using regular broth
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper freshly ground for best flavor
  • 1 tsp dried oregano or substitute with Italian seasoning for a blend of herbs
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese cheddar or mozzarella, for a cheesy topping

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and let it warm up for about 1 minute.
  2. Add 1 cup of diced onions and 2 minced garlic cloves to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
  3. Add 1 lb of ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until it is browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Drain any excess fat if needed. Then, add 1 tablespoon of tomato paste and stir well to coat the beef evenly.
  5. Pour in 1 cup of low-sodium beef broth and season with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1 teaspoon of dried oregano. Stir everything together.
  6. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. For added flavor, sprinkle 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese on top, cover the skillet, and let it melt for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Serve hot with a side of rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes.
